Exhibition “GEVONDEN” (Found) in the Catharinakerk
DOETINCHEM – From March 24 to May 1, visual artist Wiebe van Dingen from Apeldoorn is exhibiting in the Catharinakerk in the center of Doetinchem. The exhibition will be officially opened on Sunday, March 29, at 11:30 AM. The artist will speak about his work, accompanied by music from Elske te Lindert. Afterwards, the artworks can be admired while enjoying a drink.
The exhibited sculptures are three-dimensional, made from found materials, usually wood, and sometimes supplemented with metal, glass, or stone. Wiebe can regularly be found in nature. Sometimes this is in the seclusion of the Veluwe forests, and at other times in the vastness of the expansive landscape beyond. It is precisely in this relaxed search for the unknown that the surprise lies. What he encounters there, what is discovered by him, forms the basis of his artworks. Under his hands, wounds in the wood transform into human figures, speaking characters that speak their own intelligible language.
Wiebe van Dingen worked for 20 years as an art teacher in secondary education, 25 years as a goldsmith, and has been a visual artist since 1992. A visit to the Rijksmuseum drew his attention to the prayer nut, a precious travel altar originating from the first Christian community. This led to a remarkable creative process spanning more than 40 years. A varied selection of prayer nuts is also on display at the exhibition. “A prayer nut is a travel companion, but also an altar, a place of silence. You carry it in your pocket. In this way, you are connected both to the Creator and to the people whose names you have written in the nut. Thus, it is a beautiful tool for remaining in prayer for those who are dear to your heart.”
The church is open from Tuesday to Saturday from 11 am to 4 pm. Every Saturday, and occasionally during the week as well, Wiebe will be present to provide explanations to interested visitors and to engage in conversation regarding the exhibited works. For the exhibition and the opening: Admission is free; a voluntary donation at the exit to help cover costs is appreciated.
