Kerkenbeurs (Church Fair)

On Saturday 18 March I was on the stand of Platformkerkenkunst and ARTWAY at the Kerkenbeurs in Utrecht. These organisations look after the interests of both churches and artists. It was striking that several church wardens had an eye for the technical side of the building but did not realise how decisive a well-considered liturgical plan is, one in which image (form and arrangement) and colour largely set the tone. The importance of using visual art and other art forms in the church gathering is often overlooked. An image sometimes says more than a thousand words. Conveying a lesson, message or understanding is not limited to speaking alone. Jesus often spoke in images and even drew in the sand… I enjoyed meeting visitors, the sincere questions and the lively exchange.
