Sea glass

Sea glass is washed-up glass, for example from a broken bottle whose shards have ended up on the beach through the current and the surf. Through sand, wind and water the glass has become grey and matt. Sharp edges have been worn away and dulled. Sometimes the colour still shines through. An observant walker spots the pieces of sea glass and picks them up. Some collect them, and others are able to make a beautiful piece of jewellery from them. In the book “Zeeglas” (Sea Glass) by Els Florijn, a couple in love walk along the beach. He picks up a piece of blue sea glass and has it set in a ring. Years go by and the main character grows older. After many years someone receives an inheritance. Then the memory returns of the encounter at which the ring was passed on to the next generation. What am I making, what are you making, to pass on to the next generation in decades to come…?

Just as I had written this down, a young woman climbed onto a stage and spoke about a handful of colourful gemstones and diamonds with a layer of dust on them. Her appeal was: “Clean them!” These pieces of sea glass, gemstones and diamonds are like precious words and promises that you have received over the course of your life. May these words come back to your memory and resonate, so that your life begins to shine as it was meant to. I love strolling along the beach, and I have found my own pieces of sea glass too. I have worked one of those pieces into my prayer nut.
