Van Letter tot Leven (From Letter to Life)
Exhibition ‘Van letter tot Leven’ (From Letter to Life) in the Wilhelminakerk in Dordrecht, on the occasion of 400 years of the Synod of Dort and the first printing of the Bible in the Statenvertaling (States Translation). The exhibition runs from 26 October to 24 November. You will find my work on the upper floor.
Notes on “Door”, a work by Wiebe van Dingen.
The base is a thick slice of oak (65 x 51 x 5 cm). The growth rings are clearly visible, giving the impression of great age. Drying cracks show that natural processes leave their traces. The bark all around sits neatly in place like an elegant decoration.
Glass.
Six drop-shaped pieces of fused glass are inlaid across the surface. The glass consists of two layers of clear glass with some pigments fused over them. The drop shape has a twofold meaning: water as rain, and the image of a germinating seed, new LIFE.
The Arabic text.
Printing is a technique that enables people to print texts mechanically. But when someone is unable to connect meaning with letters, words and writings, no understanding arises. When people read and then understand, the letter will bring life. An Arabic speaker showed me the way. It says: “Door, Opening, Way, Victory, Reconciliation”!
Dimensions of the oak slice: 65 x 51 x 5 cm, made in 2018.
